Every master drummer must spend countless hours practicing their drumming in order to become the best. If you’re a newbie who is looking for the best drumming techniques for beginners, this article is definitely what you need.
Holding the stick properly
As a beginner, your very first lesson should be how to have the perfect hold on your drumsticks. Many drummers find themselves holding the sticks in the wrong position in a very long time, which greatly decreases their performance.
With that being said, here is how you should follow:
- Start by making a gun shape using your hand with the index finger pointing outward.
- Position your hand above the snare drum for about 5-7 inches with your palm facing up.
- Place the drumstick on the second crease of your index finger with the tip rest on the pad.
- Gently position the drumstick to find the “sweet spot” in which the stick will generate the best rebounds with each beat you drop on the pad.
- Place your thumb on top of the stick, and make sure you don’t grip it.
- Now effortlessly lift your hand on, with the palm facing forward. You would want the end of the stick to touch the soft pad of your hand because it would do a great job at absorbing impacts while you’re drumming, thus reducing fatigue and stress.
- After that, wrap all of your remaining fingers on the drumstick and face your palm downward. You should feel a little unfamiliar at first as the grip is quite loose, but don’t worry, it won’t come flying off your hand while playing.
- With this holding technique, you won’t feel as much pain and stress as you play for an extended time.
Use your wrist to play
No matter what type of music you’re playing, you want to use your wrist to control the drumstick. So, why the wrists? You may ask. Although we can sometimes see people playing drums with their finger or shoulder, it is often considered an unpopular method as you will burn out more energy and experience more difficulties. Playing with wrists, on the other hand, will provide you with some advantages, which are:
- Always stay relaxed as it conserves more energy than you might think
- You can utilize the rebound effects using your wrists
- It’s easier to control your tempo and switch between different playing styles
Medium-full stroke roll
It’s one of the most basic drumming techniques for beginners required to master if you want to be a drummer. The purpose is to generate medium-volume with good consistency. Once you practice it successfully, you don’t have to play in any particular type of grip, but it could be French grip, German grip, American grip, Traditional grip, and so on.
The key here is to maintain a constant angle of 45o between your drum and the plane of the pad. You can start by practicing single stroke rolls; make sure you do it on both hands and with good consistency. The head of the stick should return to its original position once you finish the stroke. Keep practicing until you can perform a medium-full stroke roll with ease; you’ll be surprised to realize how much your speed and consistency as improved after mastering this technique.
Rebounding double stroke
When you start to practice drumming, your first lesson would be the single stroke technique. And once you’ve practiced it properly, your control and speed will surely be much better. But what if I say you can even double the speed with the rebounding technique I’m going to show you?
Let’s go back to the first technique of holding the drumstick, in which I’ve highlighted the rebound effect. Notice that you can have rebounded with each time hitting the stick on the pads. By taking advantage of this effect, you can perform Rebounding Double Stroke to achieve an even higher drumming speed.
Start by hitting your drumstick on the pad, let it bounce another beat. Then use your wrist to stop it and redo what you just did. You can do it single-handed first then double-handed; keep going until you’re familiar with the technique. You’ll be amazed at how awesome it is once you get the hang of it, and your drumming will be much faster thanks to this technique.
Use heavier sticks when practicing
Notice how baseball players use bats which are heavier than their regular bats to enhance their speed and strength? This can also apply to play the drum, as using heavier stick will make your old ones seem much lighter. So, try this technique if you want to enhance your drumming speed and power.
But keep in mind that using heavier sticks when practicing will have negative effects on your control as you will find it harder to maintain a constant grip at first. So, make sure you play a few grooves your old sticks before going on stage, just in case they won’t fly straight to your audience during your performance.
Singles to doubles exercise
This is a fun and intuitive exercise for all beginners to get better with their drumming, especially when practicing the rebounding technique.
Start by playing the single stroke roll with both your hands, then effortlessly switch to double stroke using the rebounding technique. You will quickly notice that it is super easy to do it and the sound is also not bad at all.
Try to do it as fast as you can and find the right tempo. This technique will make it so much easier and more exciting for you when practicing rebounds, instead of hitting boring beats on the pad at a low tempo.
